18 Jun 2010 - Special Defects 2 studio reports

Here's a lightning-fast update people... I had an absolutely fantastic time over in Stockholm! Unsurprisingly, it was a tremendous experience to work with the masterful Fredrik Thordendal!! I can't thank him enough for inviting me, as well as the great people at Toontrack, Meinl, Tama and Evans who made this possible. You can read about the recording sessions on the Meinl Cymbals website, here are the links:

23 May 2010 - Boatloads of jolly announcements!

Once again my friends, this news update is long overdue, I know. But so is my catching some sleep. I've been working in the trenches non-stop these past few months and there's lots of good things to talk about...
But first, I want to sincerely tip my hat to everyone who attended one (or all) of my Tama/Meinl drum clinics last March, as well as everyone who made that amazing tour possible! Thank you all!!! You all blast & grind like masters in my book!!!

Soilwork_2010_s.jpg

Now let's talk about the brand new SOILWORK album. It's called The Panic Broadcast and it's coming for yo' momma this July. It features some of the heaviest, grooviest, fastest and majestic-est songs this band has ever committed to hard drive. It stars the dream duo of Peter Wichers and SCARVE's very own Sylvain Coudret shredding the guitars to bits. It has ten songs, none of which are alike yet all of which are 100% pure SOILWORK. It sounds like a fist in the face, but with a lot of dynamics... Let's say it sounds like a well-balanced, hard-hitting, subtle yet chin-crushing uppercut.
You can taste the Panic right now by means of the tune Two Lives Worth Of Reckoning streaming on SOILWORK's MySpace page. Well... What are you waiting for?!

Ok, so you wanna read some more, huh? Alrighty then! Last month, I completed recording drums for my long-time friend Michael Dorrian's ANATOMY OF I. This here is a full-on metal bulldozer inspired by some of the genre's classic class-acts- DEATH comes to mind. Even better: the album will feature fretless low-end magic by none other than the legendary Steve DiGiorgio of SADUS, TESTAMENT and DEATH fame! Enjoy a couple of rough demo tracks here while the recordings continue.

And now for some of the most exciting news I've ever had the pleasure to announce: in a few weeks, I'll be in Stockholm to track drums for the follow-up to one of my all-time favorite records! Ever!!! If you haven't yet heard the unique masterpiece that is Sol Niger Within by MESHUGGAH guitarist Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects, you're missing out on one of the greatest compositions of all time. Simple as that.
Special Defects 2 will once again feature the mind-boggling rhythms of drum god Morgan Agren, and I can't even begin to express how excited and honored I feel to have been asked by Fredrik to lay down some drums for this album as well... I still expect an email one of these days saying: "April Fool's! Did you really believe this was actually true?" Only time will tell. If you too need proof that there will really be a Special Defects 2, check out a secret Area 51 satellite feed of Morgan's recent- or so they claim- recording sessions here.

Batteur_2010.jpg

Another little something I'm more than a tad honored about, is to have been featured not once but twice in France's leading drum magazine BATTEUR within the past four months! The January issue (233) named yours truly as "one of the 100 greatest drummers in the history of rock"- wowee!- whereas the April issue (236) has a very cool two-page Dirk feature alongside nine other extreme drummers such as Tomas Haake, Gene Hoglan and Sean Reinert. Many thanks to Batteur and my good friend and great drummer Gael Feret- you're way too kind, really!

As if all that wasn't enough, here's some more stuff I'm currently laboring on: part 2 of Toontrack's Library Of The Extreme; the second PHAZE I album; demos for the next ABORTED full-length; and a bunch more projects, all extremely exciting but still wrapped in a mystical veil of secrecy.

The bottom line of it all: keep checking back! There will be more frequent updates in the coming months. I promise.
